Embarking on a career as a medical aesthetician can be incredibly rewarding, offering the chance to help others feel confident in their skin while working in a dynamic and ever-evolving field. Whether you’re already involved in the aesthetics industry or just beginning to explore the idea, understanding what it takes to become a Licensed Facial Specialist and Certified Medical Aesthetician will allow you to advance your career to a new plateau. In this blog, we’ll delve into the process of becoming a medical aesthetician and provide invaluable advice from Lina Alzate, a seasoned practitioner and instructor at Florida Academy of Medical Aesthetics (FAMA).

The Journey to Becoming a Facial Specialist/Medical Aesthetician

What Does it Mean to be a Medical Aesthetician in Florida?

In Florida, a medical aesthetician (also known as a paramedical aesthetician) is a skincare professional with a Facial Specialist License plus the advanced training FAMA provides in our Medical Aesthetician Workshop. Facial Specialists with this training are qualified to work alongside doctors, dermatologists, and plastic surgeons to offer specialized skincare treatments that incorporate leading-edge technology. These treatments may range from deep chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser skin resurfacing, to dermaplaning, nano needling, and platelet-rich plasma therapy. Unlike general aestheticians who typically work in spas or salons, medical aestheticians are trained to perform more advanced procedures and typically work in medical settings, such as dermatology clinics, plastic surgery offices, and medical spas.

The Educational Pathway

The first step toward becoming a Facial Specialist (aesthetician) is to attend an accredited school such as Florida Academy, where you’ll receive comprehensive training in various skincare treatments as well as skin analysis, the physiology of skin, skin disorders and diseases, and the use of advanced skincare technology. Here’s a sampling of what the Florida Academy  Skincare curriculum includes

Both theory and hands-on clinical training are covered to ensure students develop the highest level of technical competency. Students work with equipment that represents the most advanced technical standards. They also enjoy the benefits of working with professional-grade skincare and makeup lines.

After completing the required coursework, which takes 280 clock hours, you’ll need to pass the school’s written and practical exams. There is no state board exam. And upon passage, you’ll be ready to apply to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) for your Facial Specialist License.

Now you’re ready to take your training to a higher level. FAMA’s Medical Aesthetician Workshop On Campus qualifies students for both a Medical Aesthetician Certification from Florida Academy and a National Phlebotomy Certification from the NHA (National Healthcareer Association). Then you’ll have achieved the rank of Medical Aesthetician and earned the NHA’s CPT (Certified Phlebotomy Technician) designation. Better yet, if you enroll while you’re in our Skincare Program, you’ll qualify for a student discount on the workshop.
